Stephan Spicher, Eternal Line  XL Gallery, Moscow

Exhibition Catalogue

Concept & Design Thinking

This exhibition catalogue was developed for Swiss artist Stephan Spicher's exhibition "Eternal Line" at XL Gallery in Moscow. The central concept revolves around the artistic exploration of continuity, rhythm and eternal movement, symbolised by the "line" — a fundamental element of Spicher's work.

Conceptual Approach

The catalogue design interprets the artist's method of combining organic spontaneity with precise craftsmanship. Reflecting Spicher's innovative artistic practice, the design uses experimental printing techniques, material diversity and tactile experiences to connect deeply with the viewer.

Materiality & Technique

The cover features a striking graphic realised through an artisanal process using screen-printed graffiti lacquer. While the lacquer was still wet, a delicate sheet of Dutch metal (imitation gold leaf) was carefully placed on top. After drying, the metal was deliberately removed with a hard brush, leaving a rich texture and creating a striking visual metaphor for the artist's expressive strokes — at once structured and spontaneous

Design Features & Layout

The spiral-bound format, unusual for traditional art catalogues, deliberately emphasises openness and flexibility — reflecting the artistic gesture of Spicher's continuous line concept. Inside, pages alternate between vividly reproduced artworks and blank spaces, signifying pauses, respites and reflection. Transparent and coloured pages add layers of visual and tactile complexity, inviting the reader to experience both physical and conceptual layering, similar to the artist's own multi-layered techniques on canvas, wood and metal.

Typography & Colour Scheme

The typography is minimalist yet precisely orchestrated, underscoring the refined simplicity at the heart of Spicher's work. Gold accents juxtaposed against deep black surfaces evoke a sense of elegance and profundity, while bold reds and vibrant blues punctuate the experience with emotional resonance.

Conceptual Message

Overall, this catalogue is more than just a document of artworks; it's a thoughtful journey into the heart of Stephan Spicher's creative vision, emphasizing the eternity of artistic dialogue, process-driven discovery, and the ever-evolving relationship between form and material.
