Concept & Design Thinking

The design for the Belletage Restaurant was inspired by the client's request for a space that felt simultaneously refined and understated. My central idea was to subtly integrate classical aesthetics into a contemporary setting. To achieve this, I turned to the art of Jan Vermeer of Delft, renowned for his elegant simplicity and mastery of light. I incorporated enlarged oil-painted reproductions of fragments from Vermeer's paintings and presented them on easels as stand-alone screens. This strategic use of artwork allowed the creation of distinct zones within the open dining area without the rigidity or heaviness of permanent partitions, preserving the fluidity and unity of the interior space.

The material palette reinforces this dialogue between historical reference and contemporary elegance. The walls were finished with a specially formulated plaster mix combined with natural blue clay. This unique approach resulted in a delicately textured craquelure finish, reminiscent of aged artworks, yet stable enough to prevent damage or deterioration over time. This natural crackling effect not only visually echoes the textures in Vermeer's paintings, but also adds warmth and depth to the interior.

The choice of furniture and decoration further emphasises the thematic coherence. A carefully selected combination of black and white elements — from the grand piano to the crisp linen and minimalist seating — creates visual rhythm and clarity. At the same time, reflective surfaces, polished floors and precise lighting placement enhance the refined ambience. The result is an atmosphere that effortlessly balances sophistication and serenity, capturing the timeless essence of Vermeer's subtle drama in a modern restaurant setting.
